Sercial dos Villões 2023 (D.O.P. Madeirense, Madeira Island) is made entirely from Sercial (also known as Esgana-Cão), one of Madeira’s oldest and most distinctive grape varieties, prized for its naturally high acidity. The vines, around 30 years old, are grown on volcanic, acidic leptosol and andosol soils in Seixal, on Madeira’s north coast, at 200 meters above sea level and 700 meters from the ocean. Hand-harvested grapes were transported to Porto Santo and direct-pressed in whole clusters, separated into three fractions and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. No sulfur was added until the end of fermentation, allowing pre-oxidation for purity and texture. The wine aged 9 months on full lees—88% in horizontal stainless steel tanks and 12% in new French oak barrels. Pale lemon in color, it delivers a clean, mineral, and citrus-driven nose with a hint of pitanga (Surinam cherry). The palate is tense, saline, and linear, marked by vivid acidity and lasting persistence. Alcohol 12% · Total SO? <70 mg/L · 870 bottles produced (0.75L) released June 2024.
