Verdelho dos Villões 2023 (D.O.P. Madeirense, Madeira Island) is made from the native Verdelho grape, sourced from three vineyards on Madeira’s north coast—one in Seixal and two in the Vale de São Vicente. The vines, 15 years old and trained on espaliers, grow in acidic volcanic soils (leptosols and andosols) shaped by the island’s Atlantic climate. Grapes were hand-harvested on Madeira and transported to Porto Santo for vinification. Whole clusters were direct-pressed and naturally fermented without sulfur additions, allowing a brief pre-oxidation and a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and one new French oak barrel. The wine aged 9 months on lees, 85% in stainless steel and 15% in barrel. Pale citrus-yellow, it shows a fresh, volcanic-mineral nose with a touch of tropical fruit. The palate is taut, saline, and intensely fresh, with marked acidity and a long, clean finish. It’s a natural match for seafood and richer fish, where its salinity and tension cut through texture beautifully. Alcohol 12.5% · Total SO? <70 mg/L · 1,770 bottles released (0.75L) in June 2024.
